He was born on 25 December 1924, Gwalior and he died on 16 August 2018 at All India Institute Of Medical Science, Delhi. He was a very well known personality especially known for his work during his Prime Minister tenure.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee Early Life:

His father Krishna was a school teacher. He did his schooling from the Saraswati Shishu Mandir, Gwalior and his higher studies from Laxmi Bai College. He completed his post-graduation with an M.A. in Political Science from DAV College, Kanpur. By 1942 he was already an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Though he was only 16 years old at the time.

  1. His father name was Krishna Bihari Vajpayee and his mother name was Krishna Devi.
  2. In his childhood, he was deeply influenced by the works of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Sarat Chandra Chatterjee, Munshi Premchand and Maithili Sharan Gupt.
  3. Before joining the Rashtriya Swayam Sewak Sangh in 1939, he was inclined towards communism for a brief period.
  4. In 1942, he, along with his elder brother, Prem, was arrested for 23 days for participating in Quit India Movement against British Government.
  5. He dropped out of law school to become a joint editor of the RSS magazine 'Rashtradharma'.
  6. He fought his first Lok Sabha election in 1953 from Lucknow but came in 3rd. In 1957, he won his first election to the Lok Sabha from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh.
  7. Nehru predicted that one day Vajpayee would become the prime minister of India.
  8. When Nehru died, Vajpayee paid him glowing tribute:"Nehru was an honest man who never afraid of negotiation and never negotiated with fear".
  9. After India routed Pakistan in the 1971 war, Vajpayee hailed the then PM of Indira Gandhi as 'Durga'.
  10. In 1984 general elections, he was defeated in Gwalior by a margin of around 200,000 votes by the Congress's Madhavrao Scindia.
