  • Henry Beachell was born on September 21, 1906, Waverly, Nebraska, U.S and he reached the final abode on 13 December 2006(aged 100 years). 
  • He was an American plant breeder.
  •  His research led to the development of hybrid rice cultivars that saved millions of people around the world from starvation.
  • In 1930 he earned an agronomy degree from the University Of Nebraska.
  • After graduation he studied at Kansas State University, Beachell worked for the U.S Department of Agriculture in Texas.

What was his major contribution?

  • In U.S department he created 9 rice varieties, which eventually accounted for more than 90 % of the U.S long-grain rice production.
  • He was also known as the most important person in rice improvement in the world.
  • As a farmer planted higher-yielding rice, nutrition improved in many Asian countries.
  • It also helped to increase the income of farmers.

  • He received several international awards like Japan Prize in 1987 and World Food Prize in 1996.
